About Us
Actually, at this point, it's not exactly about "us" ... it's just "me" ... but hopefully that will change ...
My name is Sue Hansen and I am trying to convince anyone who'll listen ... most notably the Town of Riverhead ...
to use 300 of the 2900+ acreas that was gifted to them by the U.S. Navy (1996), as an animal sanctuary.
Why?
For a number of reasons ...
the most important being that it would serve as a venue to deliver the message ...
"Respect Life"
The facility, as I envision it, would provide sanctuary to animals that have been abandoned, exploited, confiscated, retired from circuses, rescued etc.
Wild animals, unfortunatedly, find themselves displaced from their natural environment by man and when their "usefulness" has passed, there is nowhere for them to go. Some may find safe haven in an existing sanctuary, but many are turned away for lack of space.
At the Calverton Zoo and Animal Sanctuary, every animal would tell a story. And that story would serve to educate the public about the conditions that exist for animals today. It would service the community and surrounding area. It would be a destination for school trips and family outings throughout Long Island. (Note: The Bronx Zoo is 265 acres and about 90 miles away.)
The Town of Riverhead has been given an extraordinary gift.
The Calverton Zoo and Animal Sanctuary would be a gift for future generations ... a legacy ...
